A man has been charged with a number of driving offences after a PSNI officer was dragged by a car during a traffic stop in Co Tyrone.

A policeman was injured in the incident which happened in Omagh on Sunday during a traffic stop.

He sustained multiple fractures to his foot along with cuts and bruises during what has been described as “a very dangerous situation” on Beltany Road shortly after 11pm.

A 24-year-old suspect was arrested and has since been charged with driving with excess alcohol in his breath and failing to stop for police.

He has also been charged with assault on police and causing grievous bodily injury by dangerous driving.

PSNI Inspector discusses instances of assault while on duty

The man is due to appear before Omagh Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, July 8.

“As is usual procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service,” a PSNI spokesperson said.

Chief Inspector Graham Dodds previously warned the incident “could have had a much, much more dire outcome”.
