WARSAW – An assassination attempt on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was thwarted at the Rzeszów airport, according to Vasyl Maliuk, head of Ukraine’s Security Service.
The attempted attack was to take place in April 2024, Kyiv has reported.
Polish interior ministry spokesperson Jacek Dobrzyński stated that on 17 April, 2024, officers of the Internal Security Agency detained a Polish citizen, Paweł K., in the Lublin Voivodeship, Eastern Poland.
The man was suspected of having declared his willingness to cooperate with Russian intelligence agency, GRU. He was detained “in connection with an investigation into declaring readiness to act on behalf of a foreign intelligence service against the Republic of Poland,” Dobrzyński said in a statement. “Along with the suspect’s detention, officers searched his place of residence, where they secured evidence as well as illegally possessed ammunition.”
According to Dobrzyński, the investigation established that Paweł K. had declared his willingness to act on behalf of GRU.
“His tasks were to include, among other things, gathering information about the Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport. This was intended, among other purposes, to assist Russian intelligence services in planning a possible assassination attempt on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky,” the spokesman added.
