Brexit may be done, but for many Britons trying to spend time in Europe, the travel rules are still causing headaches.
The Liberal Democrats are urging the government to address growing concerns among families, businesses and retirees. North East Fife MP Wendy Chamberlain has described the current post-Brexit restrictions as “increasingly disruptive”.
Speaking to The Connexion, Chamberlain said: “The 90-day limit on stays in Europe is increasingly disruptive for families and businesses across the UK. Whether it’s grandparents who can’t spend extended time with loved ones abroad, or small businesses facing unnecessary travel restrictions, people are being let down by a Brexit deal that simply doesn’t work.”

Since Brexit, UK citizens face the same restrictions as other ‘third-country’ visitors to the EU: a maximum stay of 90 days within any 180-day period, unless they apply for a visa. Meanwhile, EU citizens can visit the UK for up to six months visa-free.
Calls grow for fairer EU travel rights for Britons with family, property or business ties
The difference in rules has sparked frustration among Britons with property, family or business links in Europe. Online groups in France, Spain, Portugal, and Italy have been campaigning for a more flexible arrangement.
The Liberal Democrats are calling on Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government to open discussions with Brussels on a possible new agreement. Whether Labour is prepared to renegotiate aspects of the Brexit deal remains unclear.
For many, the issue goes beyond holidays. Some are struggling to maintain family ties, care for relatives abroad, or manage business operations across borders.
For now, British travellers heading to Europe must continue to monitor their time carefully. The debate over travel rights looks set to continue.
