Fashion designer Virgil Abloh had a profound impact on culture, one that extended far beyond clothing into the worlds of music and art. Now, a new biography about Abloh is hitting shelves.

Written by Robin Givhan, a Pulitzer Prize-winning critic, Make It Ours “is at once a remarkable biography of a singular creative force and a powerful meditation on fashion and race, taste and exclusivity, genius and luxury,” and features interviews from Abloh’s friends, collaborators, and peers.

The book, published by Crown, is available in hardcover and as an e-book from retailers like Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Bookshop.org.

Make It Ours: Crashing the Gates of Culture with Virgil Abloh

Virgil Abloh rose to fame as the founder of streetwear label Off-White, before becoming the head of menswear design at Louis Vuitton in 2018 and the first Black designer to lead the storied French house. Abloh was also known for his involvement in the music industry, including leading Kanye West’s creative agency, Donda.

Abloh died in 2021 from a rare form of cancer, and was succeeded at Louis Vuitton by his friend, Pharrell Williams, who paid tribute to the designer after his death, writing “Virgil you were a kind, generous, thoughtful creative genius. Your work as a human and your work as a spiritual being will live forever.”

Givhan serves as a critic-at-large for The Washington Post and won a Pulitzer Prize in 2006 for fashion criticism. The book arrives amid an emerging spotlight on Black designers, including this year’s Met Gala theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” which was co-chaired by Pharrell Williams, A$AP Rocky, and LeBron James and was held on May 5. The Gala was accompanied by a book of the same name.
