Sheffield Wednesday could set to make an internal appointment when it comes to replacing the outgoing Danny Rohl.

Rohl is nearing his Owls exit while players at Hillsborough are still awaiting payment after owner Dejphon Chansiri failed to fulfill May’s wage obligations.

Should Chansiri fail to pay June’s wage bill on time, Rohl’s players will be allowed to leave the South Yorkshire club on a free transfer, subject to a 15-day notice period.

Meanwhile, as Owls supporters are unanimous in their disappointment with matters at Hillsborough, football finance expert and senior lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University, Dan Plumley, told Football Insider that Sheffield Wednesday could be sold for £100million.

The South Yorkshire outfit received their fixture list for the upcoming 2025/26 Championship season on Thursday, 26 June.

But amid the financial chaos overseen by Chansiri, planning for next season could be easier said than done, as several player exits are on the potential horizon.

Meanwhile, as reported by the Sheffield Star [26 June], Rohl did not attend the start of preseason at Wednesday’s Middlewood Road training ground.

However, the report adds that assistant coach Henrik Pedersen was there, and is one of the candidates to replace the German once he departs.

Pedersen set for difficult task at Hillsborough

On Thursday, 26 June, Sheffield Wednesday released a statement in which Chansiri explained his reasons as to why he had not yet sold the Championship club.

But for as long as the controversial Thai businessman remains in charge at Hillsborough, the Owls are unlikely to be able to name an external hire.

Rohl has grown tired of working under Chansiri, and any potential replacement would likely encounter the same fate amid Wednesday’s ever-growing financial struggles.

Even if the Owls were not surrounded by the severely chaotic backdrop of unpaid players, Rohl would prove to be an incredibly tough act to follow after the stellar job he has performed at Hillsborough.

Despite the difficult circumstances surrounding Sheffield Wednesday, the German first kept his side in the Championship despite inheriting a struggling squad in the 2023/24 season.

He subsequently steered the Owls to mid-table comfort last term, but emulating such exploits seems nigh on impossible for Pedersen at this moment in time.
