France enter Women’s Euro 2025 with the goal of taking the next step forward from their semi-final defeat to Germany in the previous edition of the tournament.
Les Bleues are under new management from their previous major tournament and will be looking to win France their first major honour in women’s football.
- The Manager: Laurent Bonadei
An experienced coach at the youth level, Laurent Bonadei became the manager of the French Women’s National team following the conclusion of the 2024 Olympic Games.
This was his first head coach role in senior football, as the assistant coach moved up to fill the void left by Hervé Renard’s departure.
Bonadei may not be as established as some of the other managers of top teams who are heading to the Euros, but he has certainly done well for his reputation with some of the results his team has gained ahead of the competition. No more notable than their 2-1 win over current European champions, England, in the Nations League.
An up-and-coming manager who has a talented group of players at his disposal, Bonadei has a chance to etch his name into French football history this summer.
- Journey to Qualification:
Bonadei’s France enjoyed a very successful set of qualifiers for the Euros as they topped their group on twelve points ahead of current holders England.
During this run, they also defeated the Lionesses – a result that is sure to give them confidence heading into the tournament.
They also went undefeated in their Nations League group, winning all six of their matches and finishing a staggering 10 points ahead of second place Norway.
Chelsea winger, Sandy Baltimore, was a player who particularly stood out in their Nations League performances. The 25-year-old registered the joint-most goals in the competition, playing a key role in this impressive run of games for the French team.
Grace Geyoro is one of those players who can do it all. She will be expected to command the midfield in games and link play in all areas of the midfield.
At the same time, she is a threat in attack also, being known to arrive in dangerous areas, scoring six goals in Première Ligue throughout the 24/25 campaign.
The PSG player has also found the back of the net in France’s two most recent games.
The omission of some key players, such as former captain Wendie Renard, means that Geyoro will certainly have to step up as a leader in this tournament if France wants to reach the next level.
Peyraud-Magnin; Bacha, Lakrar, Mbock, de Almeida; Karchaoui, Jean-Francois, Geyoro; Baltimore, Katoto, Malard.
France have been drawn in a tough group for the Euros alongside England, Wales and the Netherlands:
Match 1: vs England, 5th July 20:00 (ITV1)
Match 2: vs Wales, 9th July 20:00 (ITV1)
Match 3: vs Netherlands, 13th July 20:00 (ITV4)
- Pre-tournament Predictions:
France have been present in the latter stages of recent competitions. In their last major tournament, they fell to Australia in the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
However, in the last edition of this competition, they made it to the semi-finals, where they were defeated by Germany.
Now, it is time for the French to make the next step and begin to establish themselves as serious contenders for these major titles.
This will be France’s first major tournament under the management of Laurent Bonadei. If his opening year in charge is anything to go by, France are in for a very exciting future.
Are they one of the favourites for this competition? No. Do they have an outside chance? Absolutely. France have an extremely talented squad that, if Bonadei manages to get the most out of them, can do great things in this tournament.
