More traffic diversions are in place as emergency services continue to remain at the scene of a security alert in the Waterside area of Londonderry which has seen a primary school and commercial premises evacuated.
Earlier this afternoon, police said officers are investigating a “suspicious device” reported to the PSNI in the Trench Road area of the city.
Police said the report was made to them at around 11.20am this morning and a cordon has been put in place at Knockwellan Park.
A number of homes have also been impacted.
In an updated statement, police confirmed several cordons are now place around the area.
“The security alert on Trench Road in Derry/Londonderry continues with traffic diversions now in place in the vicinity of Hollymount Park, and on Trench Road at the junction with St. Brecan’s Park.
“A cordon also remains in place at Knockwellan Park. Police remain on scene, please follow their direction.
“A number of commercial premises in the area have been evacuated, in addition to homes in Knockwellan Park, as well as in Cromkill Place as part of the public safety operation.
“We understand the disruption this has caused, especially for those directly impacted.
“Hillcrest Trust Community Centre is open as a rest centre. We will keep you updated.”
PSNI Chief Inspector Pearce said: “We understand the disruption and inconvenience this is causing, in particular for the school community and all parents and residents affected.
“We want to reassure everyone we are working our way through this situation as quickly as possible and appreciate the co-operation and patience from the school community and the public as we do so.
“We will keep you updated.”
