Gotta go fast! Hasbro’s Magic: The Gathering and Sega’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” are teaming up for three new card collections based on the “Sonic” universe, and Variety has a first look at one of the sets.
The collaboration will see “Sonic the Hedgehog” characters reimagined as Magic: The Gathering cards in a trio of “Secret Lair” card sets — one-off, limited time offerings that are distinguished from the main cycle of Magic cards that are regularly released by maker Wizards of the Coast.
Per the description for the “Secret Lair x Sonic: Friends & Foes” collection, “This drop features seven new designs that bring the amazing Sonic the Hedgehog characters to life. Wizards of the Coast paired the new card designs with original art, including some from fan-favorite Sonic artists doing their first-ever work for Magic: The Gathering cards.”
This “Secret Lair” collection includes seven cards featuring “Sonic the Hedgehog” characters: Sonic the Hedgehog, Super State, Shadow the Hedgehog, Miles “Tails” Prower, Dr. Eggman, Amy Rose and Knuckles the Echidna.
All three “Secret Lair x Sonic the Hedgehog” will be sold as both regular cards (priced at $29.99) and foil editions (for $39.99) on MagicSecretLair.com at 9 a.m. PT on July 14.
This “Sonic the Hedgehog” collaboration comes on the heels of Wizards of the Coast teaming up with video game developer Square Enix for an entire collection of cards based on the 16-game “Final Fantasy” franchise. While the “Sonic” collaboration is limited to a “Secret Lair” drop, the “Final Fantasy” cards were part of a wide release.
