Leicester City have parted ways with head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy, and now Danny Rohl could be one step closer to becoming his successor.

Ahead of the 2025/26 Championship campaign, Leicester City have parted ways with head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy in the wake of the Foxes’ Premier League demotion.

It comes amid uncertainty in the Leicester dressing room, with club captain Conor Coady set to join Rangers and Bundesliga giants Bayer Leverkusen eyeing Bilal El Khannouss.

Van Nistelrooy’s parting Leicester statement showed no signs of remorse towards the Foxes faithful, who now are tasked with sourcing his successor.

With Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl the favourite to become Leicester manager, the Foxes have been handed a major financial boost in their pursuit of the Owls boss.

Van Nistelrooy was expected to leave Leicester this summer, and on Friday afternoon, the Foxes hierarchy finally cut ties with the Dutchman.

Despite the fact some Leicester fans were open to van Nistelrooy staying, the Foxes faithful have been far more vocal in their desperation to see current Sheffield Wednesday boss Rohl appointed at the King Power Stadium.

All Leicester fans want Rohl to succeed van Nistelrooy, but the main stumbling block regarding the German head coach’s signature lies within Rohl’s £5m Owls release clause.

However, Sky Sports News have outlined a major update regarding that release clause, which massively aids Leicester’s pursuit of Rohl.

They report that “Rohl’s compensation package for another club to employ him has been halved, following negotiations with Sheffield Wednesday.

“It could cost Leicester around £1m to get Rohl, if he is the option they choose to be their new manager.”

As a result, the Foxes’ targeting of Rohl has been made far more financially accessible for the Foxes, which is prudent amid the financial struggles of King Power, Leicester’s owners.

If the Foxes hierarchy can secure Rohl’s signature this summer, they will further cement themselves as favourites for promotion in the early 2025/26 Championship predictions.

As well as Leicester, the Owls themselves are in financial trouble of their own, with prospective owner John Textor linked with a Sheffield Wednesday takeover.

Sheffield Wednesday are prepared to let Rohl leave Hillsborough this summer, and despite his persistent links with a move back to Germany, Rohl is open to staying in England beyond the summer transfer window.

Rohl spearheaded Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship survival during his maiden campaign in charge of the Owls, and this season, stabilised the club to an impressive mid-table finish, despite the Owls’ ongoing issues at boardroom level.

Pressure is inevitably on Leicester to achieve promotion next season, and given the highly-coveted Rohl’s pedigree, he could prove to be the best manager for the job in succeeding van Nistelrooy.
