The body of a man was discovered on Princes Street in Edinburgh on Wednesday morning.

Emergency services were called at around 6am to the scene after reports of an unresponsive man in the street.

Ambulance crews attended but the man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. The death is currently being treated as unexplained and police say their enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

A large area of the major city centre street has been cordoned off and a forensic tent has been erected.

A number of police and ambulance vehicles are in attendance at the scene and an area of the street, near Uniqlo, has been taped off.

Lothian Buses and Edinburgh Trams alerted locals and commuters to the incident after services were diverted.

A number of key bus routes have been forced to divert including number 3, 34, 44 and 25.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 6am on Wednesday, June 25, we received a report of an unresponsive man on Princes Street in Edinburgh.

Emergency services attended and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”

Council Leader Jane Meagher said: “I was very saddened to hear that someone had passed away on Princes Street. My thoughts are with their loved ones and all who knew them. It would be inappropriate to comment further while police investigations are ongoing.”

A statement for Lothian Buses reads: “Due to a road closure buses are unable to serve part of Princes Street and are instead diverted via Frederick Street, George Street and South St David Street eastbound until further notice.”

Edinburgh Trams also warned commuters and said: “Due to a police incident, Princes Street is closed. We are part route between West End and Edinburgh Airport in both directions.
