The turmoil at Sheffield Wednesday has taken another shocking turn following a further breach of the EFL’s regulations.
Sheffield Wednesday have been the talk of the Championship so far this summer ahead of the 2025/26 season, but for all the wrong reasons.
Financial turmoil has seen Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri fail to pay players for May, at the same time, some non-playing Owls staff had to take up emergency funding to make ends meet.
In consequence of the Owls’ issues, the EFL placed a three-window transfer ban on Sheffield Wednesday, meaning the club cannot pay transfer or loan fees during the ongoing summer transfer window.
Now, the situation has taken another turn for the worse, with Sheffield Wednesday now placed under a double EFL embargo.

Sheffield Wednesday were placed under embargo by the EFL earlier this month, under an embargo regarding ‘Regulation 54.1 – Non-payment to Players’, which led to the transfer window punishment.
Earlier this week, the Owls’ pre-season preparations were left in chaos, with news that the club’s training ground is not ready for pre-season.
With turmoil affecting almost every department at the club, Sheffield Wednesday have now had another embargo lodged against them, concerning HMRC reporting, labelled as ‘Regulation 17.3 – HMRC reporting’ on the EFL website’s Championship embargos section.
The news reported by the Sheffield Star means that Sheffield Wednesday must “settle up with the Owls squad, as well as HMRC, before the embargo is lifted”.
As well as this, Sheffield Star reporter Alex Miller explained on X that “non-football staff at Sheffield Wednesday have been given advance warning from the club that the payment of their June wages on Monday is uncertain.”

The news of embargo and uncertainty over staff wages is just the latest in a summer of hammer blows for Sheffield Wednesday.
Billionaire John Textor was “considering” buying Sheffield Wednesday from Chansiri, but only days later, it emerged that Textor-owned Lyon were relegated from the French top flight for financial issues.
With uncertainty and fear marring Sheffield Wednesday from all angles, one Owls expert has had his say on the matter.

Sheffield Wednesday supporters are in desperate need of some optimism, which is now fading even further after the latest update on the future of Owls head coach Danny Rohl.
Rohl is the Leicester City frontrunner, and in the wake of Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Foxes exit, it emerged that Rohl’s release clause has been reduced, from £5m down to £1m, which makes a summer switch to the King Power Stadium even more likely.
Amid turmoil at the boardroom level, uncertainty among the playing squad, and Rohl’s inevitable departure, Sheffield Wednesday reporter for the Sheffield Star, Joe Crann, said on X: “The situation at Sheffield Wednesday is absolutely dire.
The situation at #SWFC right now is absolutely dire. It’s truly death by a thousand cuts at the moment, with every day bringing more bad news – both on and off the field.
I’d say things can’t get worse, but they can. What this club is being put through right now is scandalous.

With the 2025/26 Championship campaign approaching, the situation at Sheffield Wednesday is nothing short of “scandalous”, and must be resolved soon to ensure the safety of one of English football’s most iconic clubs.
