Four Aces teammates Harold Varner III and Patrick Reed played alongside one another during the first round of LIV Dallas on Friday.

Varner III and his teammate Reed are tied at the top of the leaderboard after day one at LIV Dallas, following fine rounds of five-under par 67.

LIV Golf fans were treated to some exceptional golf on the incredibly hard Maridoe layout in Dallas, Texas, on Friday afternoon.

Reed spoke before LIV Dallas about being inspired by Joaquin Niemann’s fine form throughout the 2025 season so far.

However, he didn’t need to look outside of his own group at Maridoe on Friday in order to gain some inspiration.

As temperatures soared into the mid-90s, so did the birdie count in Varner III and Reed’s group.

The two American golfers made 10 birdies, an eagle and just two bogeys between them during the opening round in Dallas.

And both of them sat down to address the media after their rounds.

Varner III was asked what impressed him most about Reed’s game on day one of the LIV Dallas event.

He said: “I saw the best chip, worst putt ever. If you were watching today, he hit whatever iron on this par-5 and it was on the heel — did anyone see the shot? No, so let me explain it.

“He’s sitting like this and the green is sitting like this and over the green it’ll go on the next tee box, be like 50 yards away. So he chips it, somehow shimmies it through the rough misses the bunker and it goes to four feet and he misses the putt. But it was the best chip, best shot I saw — it will be the best shot in all of golf on this golf course this week, without a doubt, and you guys didn’t see it. That’s even better. So yeah, it was sick. I don’t have anything else to talk about.“

Reed is renowned for his exceptional short game. It could actually be argued that he is the very best in the game with any variation of wedge in his hands around the greens.

Patrick Reed’s 2025 LIV results

Reed has finished sixth, tied for third and third in the scrambling stats over the past three years on LIV.

However, if he is to get his first win on LIV, he needs to get all other aspects of his game in working order.

For a player of Reed’s calibre, those stats are quite simply not good enough.

He has a great chance to make his results look a whole lot better by adding a win to the list at Maridoe this week.

And if Reed plays like he did on day one during the final two rounds of LIV Dallas, he should have no problem breaking his winless run on LIV.
