Example pulled out of a headline set after straining his voice at Glastonbury Festival.

The artist, real name Elliot Gleave, started his Glastonbury performance at 2.45am on the Shangri-La stage on Friday morning but soon ran into difficulties when an “unexpected sound issue” caused him to sing much louder than usual.

Posting to his Instagram page, the singer told his fans: “During my set at Glastonbury, we experienced some unexpected sound issues that forced me to push my voice much harder than usual.

“I could feel it starting to go, so we made the difficult decision to cut the set short by 20 minutes to protect it ahead of the performance at Granite City Festival Aberdeen (Saturday, June 28).”

After the singer’s 40-minute set at Worthy Farm he made his way to London to catch a flight up to Scotland, hoping his voice would recover in time. Having made the journey through the night and arriving at Gatwick at 7am yesterday, Example got a less than ideal amount of rest.

He added: “I left the site immediately after the show and arrived at Gatwick by 7am, managing to get a few hours’ sleep before my flight to Aberdeen. Unfortunately when I woke up my voice was completely gone.”

He was forced to pull out of the headline slot of Saturday’s Granite City festival. Other acts on the lineup included DJ Billy Gillies, Darren Styles and Judge Jules. Example added: “I hate cancelling shows – over the past 21 years, I’ve played 1,534 gigs and only ever cancelled 11. Scotland has always been my favourite place to perform, and this was an incredibly hard decision to make.

“To everyone who was planning to see me today – and to the Granite City Festival team – I’m truly sorry. We’ll make it up to you.”

Example was one of the biggest acts of the late 00s with his hit 2010 album Won’t Go Quietly and his 2011 album Playing in The Shadows producing some huge clubbing hits including Kickstarts and Changed The Way You Kiss Me which have both been streamed more than 100 million times.
