Former Bristol City star Alex Scott played an important role in helping England Under-21s to European glory over the weekend as the Young Lions beat Germany 3-2 in extra-time to claim the Under-21s European Championship title.
The 21-year-old started and played 44 minutes of the final before being withdrawn moments before half-time with an injury.
Lee Carsley’s side had secured a 2-0 lead within the first quarter of the game thanks to early strikes from Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott and Ipswich Town’s Omari Hutchinson, but Germany cancelled both strikes out with goals from Nelson Weiper and Paul Nebel.

It looked as though the Young Lions were set for late heartbreak when Germany came close to finding a late winner in added time, but the crossbar came to James Beadle’s rescue.
Then, just moments after coming on, former Norwich City and now-Marseille forward Jonathan Rowe scored early in extra-time to restore Carsley’s side’s advantage and they managed to hold on to seal the win.
This summer’s title is England’s second consecutive win under Carsley’s management after they won the tournament back in 2023. While it is Scott’s first trophy with the Under-21s, he lifted silverware, when still a City player, in 2022 when the Under-19s won the Euro title.
Having joined the Robins from Guernsey on a pre-contract agreement in 2019, Scott wasted little time making an impact in BS3. After penning his first professional contract in March 2021, he was handed his first-team debut by Nigel Pearson off the bench against Luton Town a month later.

The then-teenager featured in all of the Reds’ last three Championship matches that same season before becoming a regular starter in the 2021/22 campaign.
In his final term at Ashton Gate, the versatile midfielder played 49 times in all competitions, scoring twice and assisting on five occasions to win the Championship Young Player of the Season award and earn a move to the Premier League with Bournemouth.
Although the 21-year-old is highly rated on the South Coast, injuries have stopped him from quite progressing as quickly as many would have expected him to after leaving the West Country. Last season, Scott started just eight Premier League games as the Cherries finished ninth under the management of Andoni Iraloa.
Hopefully, the issue that forced him off in the first half of Saturday afternoon’s final won’t rule him out for too long and the former City man will truly arrive in the Premier League next term.
