Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership of Sheffield Wednesday has been labeled a disgrace amid a slight glimmer of hope at Hillsborough.

A major deadline is looming at the South Yorkshire club, after Chansiri failed to pay staff and player wages in May.

If the Thai businessman fails to pay this month’s wage bill by the end of Monday, 30 June, Sheffield Wednesday players will be able to leave on free transfers, regardless of their contract length, subject to a 15-day notice period.

Largely thanks to Chansiri’s financial mismanagement, boss Danny Rohl intends to leave the South Yorkshire outfit ahead of next season.

The Championship club have been thrown into severe uncertainty, while Rohl has been eyed by Leicester City.

A move to the Foxes would allow the 36-year-old to compete for potential promotion to the Premier League, whereas he guided the Owls to a mid-table spot last term.

But thanks to Sheffield Wednesday’s ongoing woes, the South Yorkshire side look set for a relegation battle next season.

Meanwhile, taking to X on 30 June, the Sheffield Star’s Joe Crann revealed: “Wouldn’t say it’s ‘good’ news, because the situation itself is a disgrace, but I am hearing that payments have started being made to SWFC’s U21s now.

“It’s something, at least. As previously mentioned, not technically ‘late’ until tomorrow.”

Chansiri must sell Wednesday at next opportunity

Football Insider verdict

Regardless of whether Chansiri finally meets the Owls’ wage obligations for June in a potential last-minute twist, it is clear that he is not the right man to be in the Hillsborough ownership helm.

Wednesday enjoyed a three-game unbeaten run at the end of last season

Amid the financial turmoil at the Championship club, Chansiri has rejected two Sheffield Wednesday takeover offers, further adding to supporters’ frustrations.

Should the Thai businessman receive another offer to take the South Yorkshire outfit off his hands, he must accept it for the sake of their future, which currently looks extremely bleak.

Football finance expert and Sheffield Hallam University senior lecturer Dan Plumley exclusively told Football Insider that Chansiri can make £100million by selling Sheffield Wednesday.

But until that sort of deal is sorted, the Owls will continue residing in a severe state of limbo, which is set to beckon several player departures and probable relegation to League One.

Amid their financial struggles, Sheffield Wednesday have agreed to sell Caelan-Kole Cadamarteri to Manchester City, raising potentially vital funds in an otherwise sorry situation.
