Oscar-winner Susan Sarandon and Oscar-nominee Andrea Riseborough will star in Mary Page Marlowe at The Old Vic theatre in London this autumn.
Directed by Matthew Warchus, the production runs from 23 September to 1 November 2025 and will mark Sarandon’s UK stage debut and Riseborough’s return to theatre after 15 years.
Written by Pulitzer prize-winner Tracy Letts, the play charts the life of its title character across 70 years in 11 scenes, portrayed by five actors. Sarandon and Riseborough will each take on the role at different stages of Mary’s life, with further casting to be announced.
First premiering at Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago in 2016, Mary Page Marlowe eschews linear biography in favour of a fragmented, time-hopping structure – forming a collage of a woman’s inner and outer life, with moments that are tragic, mundane, revelatory, and intensely human.
Warchus, who has led The Old Vic since 2015 and is stepping down next year, described the play as “a sensational new work from one of America’s greatest living writers” and that he was “thrilled to be featuring two such superlative actresses, Susan and Andrea, on the Old Vic stage”. He also revealed that the entire season will be staged in-the-round, transforming the historic auditorium to offer an immersive, 360-degree experience.
Letts, whose 2007 play August: Osage County became an international success, said London has long played a role in his artistic development. “From my first experiences as a playwright here thirty years ago, to the run of August: Osage County at the National, London is an integral part of my journey. I’m deeply gratified to have Mary Page Marlowe at The Old Vic, directed by Matthew, featuring these remarkable actresses.”
Andrea Riseborough, whose performances include the Oscar-nominated To Leslie, as well as acclaimed performances in Birdman, Matilda the Musical, and most recently The Regime, said: “It’s an honour to be taking on the role of Mary – amongst others – in Tracy Letts’ poignant play, alongside the extraordinary Susan Sarandon. I’m so very grateful to be working with Matthew again and thrilled to finally work at The Old Vic, a beautiful space.”
Susan Sarandon, the Academy Award-winning star of Dead Man Walking, and known for Thelma & Louise, The Client and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, said she was “honoured to be asked to be in a play during Matthew Warchus’ final season at The Old Vic. Terrified but excited.”
The production features design by Rob Howell, lighting by Hugh Vanstone, sound by Simon Baker, and casting by Jim Carnahan.
Mary Page Marlowe is running at The Old Vic from 23 September to 1 November 2025.
