Hula-hooping is hard enough on its own, but imagine combining that with an even harder exercise?

That’s how personal trainer Reger Maffei (USA) achieved his first Guinness World Records title for the most consecutive chin ups while hula hooping (male) back in 2019.

“This was one of the most challenging ones to begin with,” he reflects.

“The first time I did it, I actually did the attempt before I knew the guidelines, so… that was silly!”

Yes, we do advise here at Guinness World Records to make sure you have received the guidelines before making a record attempt!

Guidelines in hand, Reger tried again two months later, but unfortunately did not manage to achieve the record.

However, giving up was not an option for determined Reger. A year later, on a sunny day in California, he managed to achieve the record title with a fantastic total of 16 chin ups.

“The fact that it took three times just made it oh so great to finally get that achievement,” he confessed.

Reger went on to catch the record-breaking bug and decided to challenge his hula hooping skills further, by achieving three more Guinness World Records titles:

  • Most consecutive push ups while hula hooping in abdominal plank position (male) – 47
  • Most consecutive pull ups while hula hooping (male) – 23
  • Longest duration hula hooping in abdominal plank position (male) – 7 min 41.28 sec
