Sir Andy Murray is one of the greatest tennis players that the UK has ever produced – but even he has had a few bumps in the road, including a brief split from wife Kim Sears in 2008Andy Murray and Kim Sears at Cheltenham Festival in 2019Andy and Kim have been together since 2005(Image: Getty)

With Wimbledon 2025 now underway, British sporting legend Sir Andy Murray has shared a rare glimpse into a turbulent period in his otherwise steadfast relationship with wife, Kim Sears. The tennis titan disclosed an unexpected tale from over ten years ago when a temporary separation from Sears led to a spontaneous purchase and a close encounter with the law.

Murray and Sears, who tied the knot in 2015, have long been viewed as one of the most resilient duos on the professional tennis scene. Their marriage has withstood the immense strains of Murray’s career, including the nerve-wracking SW19 showdowns that kept spectators and kin alike on tenterhooks.

From his momentous Wimbledon victories in 2013 and 2016 to the punishing matches that shaped his legacy, Sears has remained a steady pillar of support through every triumph and tribulation. Together, they are parents to four children and have forged a life grounded in mutual admiration and collective fortitude.

However, in 2008, the pair briefly went their separate ways, a period that left Murray somewhat unsteady. During a recent live event, Murray candidly confessed that he attempted to manage the emotional aftermath in a manner that was decidedly out of the ordinary: he splashed out on a Ferrari, affectionately christened “Barry the Ferrari.”, reports the Express.

“I thought it was cool,” the 38 year old chuckled. However, the thrill of his new purchase was fleeting. “The first day I took it out to drive, it got pulled over by the police because the insurance hadn’t cleared,” Murray revealed.

“I got rid of it over a couple of months, because it wasn’t really me.” This incident sheds light on a seldom-seen side of Murray, who is typically known for his unflappable presence, with rare exceptions being emotional moments on Centre Court.

Despite the initial heartache, the temporary separation from Sears only served to fortify their bond. Since getting back together, they have tackled everything life throws at them as a solid team, from the pressures of Murray’s professional life to the delights and trials of marriage and raising children.

The couple’s romance began in 2005. Kim, the daughter of player-turned-coach Nigel Sears, who has also coached Emma Raducanu, immediately clicked with Andy due to their shared passion for tennis.

They announced their engagement in 2014 and were married the following year, now residing in Surrey with their son and three daughters. With Andy stepping away from professional tennis, and coaching duties currently on hold, he has more opportunity to spend quality time with his family than ever before. However, Kim playfully hinted that this isn’t quite how things are panning out.

“He is playing so much f***ing golf,” she quipped. Yet, behind the jest lies a relationship that has only strengthened over the years. As Murray adjusts to life off the tour, his and Kim’s shared journey – characterised by love, laughter, and steadfast support – continues to be a pillar of stability, demonstrating that even a transient Ferrari can’t eclipse the lasting glow of their connection.
