Bristol City have added to their ranks early in the summer transfer window while also extending a couple of players’ contractsEmil Riis, Gerhard Struber and Cam Pring have all signed Bristol City contracts this summer(Image: Rogan/ Bristol City and Getty Images)
It speaks to just how busy this summer has been from a Bristol City perspective that it feels like the gap between the play-off defeat to Sheffield United and the start of pre-season at the Robins High Performance Centre has gone by in a flash.
That frustrating evening at Bramall Lane was a little over seven weeks ago now and, in the time since, there has been plenty of action at Ashton Gate.
Of course, you won’t need to be reminded of the headline news, the departure of Liam Manning and the appointment of Gerhard Struber as the new City boss. Either side of the change in the dugout, however, the cogs have been whirring at Ashton Gate to both add to the new head coach’s ranks and retain the players already on the Reds’ books.

Before Manning had departed for Carrow Road, the Robins moved to tie down both Cam Pring and George Tanner, two players who had played important roles in City’s top six finish last term. Both defenders put pen to paper on new three-year deals in the West Country, which will run until the end of the 2027/28 campaign.
During the period the Reds were without a head coach, the club confirmed that they had also opted to extend Josh Campbell-Slowey’s stay in south Bristol. The highly-rated defender, who was in and around the first team over the course of last term, has also signed a new three-year contract.
In the days following Struber’s appointment, City moved to tie down Rob Atkinson and Josh Stokes after both players enjoyed successful loan spells away from the West Country last term. Stokes is now signed on at Ashton Gate until 2028 after winning Cambridge United’s Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season awards, while Rob Atkinson is set to be a Robin for another three years after proving his fitness and helping Portsmouth retain their place in the Championship.
While a whole host of academy players put pen to paper on professional contracts earlier this summer, both Leo Pecover and young goalkeeper Joe Duncan have signed new deals with the Reds in recent weeks, with Pecover in particular very highly rated within the HPC and by supporters.
The latest contract announcement shared by City came on Tuesday evening when it was confirmed third-choice goalkeeper Lewis Thomas had signed a new one-year agreement, with the option of another season included. The Welshman was one of five players listed as ‘in talks’ when the retained list was published in May and so far, only Nahki Wells’ exit has been confirmed, with no update yet shared on Raphael Araoye and Olly Thomas.

Throw in the confirmed signings of Adam Randell, Joe Lumley and Emil Riis, and it feels as though Struber’s squad for his maiden campaign as Robins boss is beginning to take shape. Of course, with around two months left of the transfer window, there is still plenty of time for movement both in and out of BS3 before the September 1 deadline and it would be naive to think otherwise.
But with the squad now back in for pre-season, Bristol Live have taken the chance to round up the current make-up of the Reds’ ranks, the expiry dates of contracts and the options available to Struber at the time of writing…
