An “extremely rare” record sleeve signed by Nirvana – including frontman Kurt Cobain – could fetch up to £10k at auction.
After spending over 30 years in a loft, the record sleeve of the band’s hit album Nevermind is going under the hammer at auctioneers Wessex Auction Rooms in Wiltshire.
The sleeve was autographed by Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl after playing a gig at The Bierkeller in Bristol in November 1991.
Auctioneer and music specialist Martin Hugher said full sets of Nirvana signatures from this period are “extremely rare”.
He added that the auction will attract “global” interest.
He said: “I am extremely excited to have such an important part of musical history included in our auction.
“Full sets of Nirvana signatures from this period are extremely rare, and to have them signed so perfectly on the sleeve of the most iconic album is a collector’s dream.
“As a Bristol man myself, the local connection is also exciting for me. That Bristol Bierkeller show is the stuff of legend. I have known the vendor (a well-known local Rock & Metal DJ) for many years but have never been shown this mythical item he claimed to have in his loft… and now here it is for the world to see!
“I wouldn’t be surprised to see this sell for well over £10,000. It will attract major interest from around every corner of the globe.”
The signed Nirvana record sleeve which is expected to fetch up to £10K at auction
The date was November 4 1991, and the soon-to-be global superstars Nirvana were playing a gig to just 700 people at The Bierkeller in Bristol.
After the show friends of the local promoter hung out at the venue and spent some time speaking and sharing a beer with drummer Dave Grohl, and bassist Krist Novoselic.
They happily signed their items – one being a ticket, and one being the sleeve of their recently released Nevermind album.
The gig friends then knocked on the door of the dressing room and were welcomed in by the late singer Kurt Cobain who was chilling out post-gig.
Kurt also signed the items before the pair then went back out to the venue to continue their conversation with Dave and Krist.
The record sleeve is up for auction on Wednesday (April 16).
