• India posted 310-5 on day one of the second Test against England at Edgbaston
  • Chris Woakes had two early LBW appeals turned down by umpire Sharfuddoula
  • England reviewed the decisions but the ball clipped the stumps on umpire’s call

Chris Woakes insisted things could have been very different for England had umpiring decisions gone their way on a see-saw first day of the second Test against India.

The tourists will resume today on 310 for five with Shubman Gill unbeaten on 114.

After England won the toss and chose to bowl, Woakes had two appeals in the morning session turned down by umpire Sharfuddoula.

Captain Ben Stokes reviewed both decisions — and on both occasions the ball was shown to be clipping the stumps on umpire’s call.

‘We could easily have had them 30 for three,’ said Woakes, who was visibly angry after the second unsuccessful review.

‘You could say that (I was cursing Sharfuddoula). It was a pretty frustrating morning. Emotions were running high.

‘It’s more the fact that had those decisions gone our way, the day looks completely different. There’s probably been a few occasions where I’ve been grumpier but that was right up there.’

In the evening session, Shoaib Bashir also had an appeal turned down when he struck Ravindra Jadeja on the pads. England decided against reviewing but again, replays showed the ball hitting the stumps on umpire’s call.

‘A great day for us would have been them on 300 for seven,’ added Woakes. ‘Gill played very well. It was a big hundred for his team.’
