Chelsea are planning to accept offers for young defender Josh Acheampong in the summer transfer window amid growing interest.

That is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the 19-year-old is not expected to break into the first-team under Enzo Maresca.

As a result, they will be prepared to entertain offers for his permanent departure despite having agreed a new contract to extend his stay until 2029 just seven months ago.

Tottenham are among the clubs eyeing Acheampong while Newcastle are also believed to be keeping tabs on the highly-rated Cobham graduate.

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed in November 2024 that Liverpool were interested in Acheampong before he reluctantly put pen to paper on a new deal.

During the 2024-25 season, the defender made 12 senior appearances, including one at the Club World Cup, but is not considered a regular option.

Chelsea make Josh Acheampong decision after contract controversy

Before his contract extension last year, the Blues refused to give the defender a pathway into the first-team, as Stefan Borson told Football Insider Chelsea were acting unlawfully.

Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, has now insisted Acheampong may finally be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge in search of regular minutes.

“Chelsea have some big decisions to make this summer,” he told Football Insider.

“At this time of the year, agents tend to get busy and start talking about the players’ futures.

“There’s been a bit of talk about Josh Acheampong, which may have come from the agent, suggesting he could be leaving Chelsea.

“From what I hear, that might have come from club trying to drum up interest in him.

“As it stands, it’s unlikely that he’ll get into the Chelsea team with what they’ve already got.

“Enzo Maresca doesn’t see him breaking into the starting XI and wasn’t overly keen to give him chances last season, although he did give him a few.

“I think if offers come in for him, they’re going to be willing to let him go.

“In terms of interest, Newcastle and Tottenham have been mentioned, so let’s see if they make a move.”

Acheampong isn’t the only Chelsea player who could be on his way out of Stamford Bridge this summer, amid speculation surrounding the future of Christopher Nkunku.

Football Insider revealed on 1 July that Nkunku is expected to be sold by Chelsea in the coming weeks as they aim to shift fringe players from their squad.

With a number of incoming deals expected to follow Joao Pedro at the Blues in due course, they will be forced to cut others from their side.

This comes after Brown told Football Insider in April that Nkunku is “definitely” leaving Chelsea with a number of Bundesliga clubs interested in the move.
