The number of American-born workers soared in June while foreign-born employment plunged. According to the Department of Labor, the number of American-born workers employed rose by 830,000 in June. That is now the highest level ever of American-born workers, exceeding the prepandemic high in October of 2019.
On the other side, foreign-born jobs fell declining by 348,000 according to the Department of Labor. That is the third consecutive month of decline. Many point to the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration. If you compare the numbers from the start of 2025, foreign-born employment is down by over half a million while American-born employment is up by over two million.
The number of jobs added surpassed expectations with economists anticipating a drop in employment, instead the number rose by 3,000. The unemployment rate actually decreased to 4.1%, down from 4.2% in May.
