Square Enix has published some stunning new artwork based on Final Fantasy 9, and as you’d expect, its arrival has expectant fans in a bit of an uproar.
This is because we’re mere days away from the game’s 25th anniversary date — the 7th July — and many are betting on the title’s long-rumoured remake being officially announced as part of the celebrations.
But hey, even if it turns out that the remake isn’t real — or it isn’t ready to be revealed just yet — at least we’ve got some extremely pretty illustrations to gawk at.
The first two pictures have been crafted by Final Fantasy 9 character designer Toshiyuki Itahana, and they are jaw-droppers.
One depicts the title’s full party looking out across the landscape that surrounds the Iifa Tree — a key location in the adventure’s closing chapters. This one’s practically begging to be used as your new phone background.
Itahana’s second drawing features primary antagonist Kuja and his loyal Silver Dragon, waiting inside of the aforementioned Iifa tree.
And finally, we’ve got a more stylised illustration from Yuya Ishihata, an artist who’s created a number of pieces for Final Fantasy’s recent Magic the Gathering collaboration.
Lovely stuff, we’re sure you agree, but do these artworks really add any weight to the remake rumours?
Well, it’s hard to say. Clearly, Square Enix is making a fairly big deal out of this anniversary, and so you’d think that it has something lined up for next week. Plus, these rumours have been going around for a long time now — to the point where it’s difficult to dismiss them entirely.
In any case, we should have some more concrete answers in the coming days. Are you holding out hope for the supposed remake? Watch out for the mist in the comments section below.
