Demarai Gray always planned to return to the club where it all started.

The 29-year-old winger has returned to Birmingham City after nine-and-a-half years away which have seen him win the Premier League, make 200 top flight appearances, and enjoy spells in Germany and Saudi Arabia.

Gray has penned a three-year contract with Blues after joining from Al-Ettifaq and wants to help the club return to the Premier League.

Reflecting on his return, Gray told Blues+: “It’s something I wanted for a long time. Just to be back around the stadium, it brings back a lot of feelings. I can’t wait to get going and be back in front of the fans and see where this season can take us.

“I always said I want to come back home before I finish playing. I’m 29, it’s been 10 years since I last played here, I’m buzzing to wear the shirt.

“Having tasted success throughout my career, I’m hungry to do it with Birmingham to get the team back where we belong. It’s always been an ambitious club, but to see it now it’s attractive to a player.”

Jamaica international Gray has made some big moves in his career, but this one means the most.

A major benefit is that Gray is now no longer 4,000 miles away from his family.

Gray added: “It’s home for me. I was at the club from nine years of age. The majority of my career is associated with Birmingham. Coming back to Blues means something, it’s different to signing for another club.

“Since I’ve left, I’ve always followed, watched and supported from the outside. Even driving up to the stadium, walking back alongside the pitch, you get flashes of memories.

“It’s a completely different feeling and I’m really happy to have the opportunity.”
