Álvaro Morata has reportedly made a decisive choice about his future, rejecting a lucrative offer from Qatar to join Serie A newcomers Como in a bid to remain in contention for Spain’s 2026 World Cup squad. The 31-year-old striker, currently on loan at Galatasaray from AC Milan, is believed to be close to sealing a move to Como, a club now managed by his former teammate Cesc Fàbregas.

According to Marca, Morata has chosen footballing relevance over financial gain, prioritising a return to top-level European competition over a high-paying exit to the Middle East. Although he had publicly hinted at retirement from international duty after his costly penalty miss in Spain’s UEFA Nations League final defeat to Portugal, this latest decision suggests he is determined to continue competing for a place in Luis de la Fuente’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Como Reunion With Fàbregas Appealing for Morata

The move to Como, while unconventional for a striker of Morata’s pedigree, aligns with both his personal ambitions and desire to work with familiar faces. The Lombardy-based club has seen a remarkable rise under the leadership of Fàbregas, with a growing reputation as an ambitious project in Italy’s top flight. For Morata, the prospect of regular minutes in a competitive European league, combined with the opportunity to link up with a former Spain and Chelsea colleague, tipped the scales in Como’s favour.

Final Step Depends on Galatasaray Exit

Before the move can be finalised, AC Milan must negotiate an early termination of Morata’s loan deal with Galatasaray, which is currently set to run until January. Morata has impressed in his brief spell in Turkey, scoring six goals in 12 league appearances, but is eager to make the switch to Como as soon as possible.

With 37 international goals in 86 caps for Spain, Morata remains one of La Roja’s most experienced forwards. By staying in Europe, he keeps the door firmly open for future national team call-ups, ensuring that his World Cup aspirations remain alive and within reach.
