Google Pixel 6a owners will receive an automatic and mandatory software update in a few days that could drastically reduce battery life. Google has now confirmed that affected customers can receive up to $150 in compensation.
As we previously reported, Google will roll out an update to all Pixel 6a devices starting July 8, which could drastically reduce battery life and charging speeds. This patch will be installed automatically when the Pixel 6a is connected to the internet. The battery life will only be reduced on some Pixel 6a phones, and only if they have amassed at least 400 full charging cycles.
Officially, this software update is intended to prevent the Pixel 6a battery from overheating, which has caused some units to catch fire. The fact that not all Pixel 6a phones are affected suggests that only batteries from certain manufacturers are causing these issues. Those affected can have their battery replaced for free starting on July 21. Google has also finally confirmed details on the other two compensation options. On one hand, affected customers can receive a Google Store gift card worth $150. Alternatively, users can opt for a cash payout of $100. Google will convert these amounts to other currencies using the latest exchange rates.
Whether your Google Pixel 6a is affected and thus eligible for compensation can be checked on this website. However, users who choose the voucher should note that it cannot be combined with other promotions or discounts. Considering the fact that Pixel smartphones are often significantly cheaper at other retailers, the cash payout might be the better choice in some regions. For example, the Pixel 9a currently costs €549 at the official Google Store in Germany, but only €452 on Amazon.
