A popular American chain in Liverpool is being “70% reworked” as the brand reaches a milestone. TGI Friday’s, which has a venue based in Liverpool ONE, is celebrating turning 60.

The company first opened in New York in 1965, with “flowing cocktails and charismatic bartenders making every night feel like a Friday”. Six decades on, the company has established itself as a go-to for many here in the UK.

Now, to mark its birthday, TGI Friday’s is changing the majority of its menu and giving customers free food. From Friday, July 4, the restaurant is launching its “biggest menu refresh ever” across all 49 UK restaurants – and to celebrate, diners can bag free food just by making a comeback themselves for seconds.

Essentially, if customers try something new from the revamped menu during Independence Day weekend (Friday 4, Saturday 5, or Sunday 6 July) and come back any time in the same month, they can get the second dish for nothing.

However, there is just one catch. The fan-favourite Glazed Sesame Chicken Strips aren’t included in the offer. This is because TGI Friday’s wants you to ditch your usual order and “discover a new obsession”.

Chief Executive at TGI Friday’s Julie McEwan told the ECHO: “Liverpool has always had that unmistakable Friday’s spirit – vibrant, social and full of flavour.

“We’ve been proud to share that energy with our Liverpool guests for more than a decade. As we celebrate 60 years of TGI Friday’s, we’re inviting guests across the city to rediscover the experience this Independence Weekend.

“Try a dish from our new-look menu and come back any time in July for a second dish completely free.

“With free iced tea and popcorn at every table, bold new flavours, and that signature Fridays atmosphere – it’s the ultimate comeback, and everyone’s invited.”

The rebrand will include changes to 50% of the menu as well as 70% of the grill items being reworked. New items include a Chicago-style hot dog and a beef dip sandwich, as well as a range of desserts including American Key lime pie and Mississippi mud pie.

For sides, you can expect southern-style BBQ pit beans. The free food offer can be redeemed by joining Stripes Rewards via the TGI Fridays app.
