A Birmingham burglar is at risk of becoming ‘institutionalised’ after confessing to his latest break-in.
Matthew Boreland appeared at Birmingham Crown Court today (Thursday, July 3), where he admitted charges of burglary and theft.
The offences involved breaking into a home in Selly Park on April 14 this year and stealing a bag, alcohol, papers and two sets of keys.

The theft charge specifically related to taking a Toyota Yaris.
His latest burglary conviction makes him a ‘third strike’ offender, which will likely result in him receiving a mandatory minimum sentence of three years unless it can be argued there are ‘exceptional circumstances’.
BirminghamLive previously reported on Boreland in 2023 after he smashed his way into a home in Henley-in-Arden using a breeze block in order to steal an Audi.
The now 40-year-old from Hillmeads Road, Kings Norton, appeared at court via a video link from HMP Hewell this morning.
Sarah Turner, defending, applied for sentencing to be adjourned for a pre-sentence report and psychiatric report.
She said: “The underlying issue is that he was suffering from an alcohol addiction at the time. He was self-medicating.
“He struggles when released from prison. There is a concern as to an element of institutionalisation.”
The barrister added that pyschiatric and pre-sentence reports will help assess his motivations and culpability as well as ‘assist in setting him up for the future’.
Sentencing was adjourned until September 15.
