Dejphon Chansiri has been the owner of Sheffield Wednesday for many years and the club, especially in 2025, have largely struggled.

The financial situation at Sheffield Wednesday seems to be getting worse with each passing week.

The latest problems began to pick up at the end of the 2024/25 season when wages were going unpaid.

Fast forward to July, and Sheffield Wednesday face three embargoes by the EFL for various reasons, including wages and failure to pay clubs like Southampton for the Shea Charles deal.

Dejphon Chansiri has been slammed for his running of the club, including by journalist Henry Winter, who recently wrote, ‘Every day Dejphon Chansiri remains at Sheffield Wednesday, a famous old club gets dragged further and further down. The shambles has become a scandal.’

Now, the ‘smartest thing’, perhaps the only thing, he has done since taking over the Yorkshire club has been highlighted.

Kieran Maguire shared an update on what Sheffield Wednesday sources are saying about Barry Bannan reports earlier this week.

The finance expert has also provided data to explain the Owls and Hull City’s current transfer embargo problems.

Now, Maguire has once again been discussing the Yorkshire club’s current owner when speaking to Benjamin Bloom this week.

He was speaking on the cost of sacking managers, and when discussing compensation, named the ‘smartest thing’ the Thai businessman has done.

Maguire said: “If the manager is good then, and we saw when Graham Potter went from Swansea to Brighton, I think there was £2m compensation, when Steve Bruce went from Sheffield Wednesday to Newcastle, which is probably the smartest thing that Dejphon Chansiri has done in his reign, admittedly, possibly there’s not a lot of competition.”

What Steve Bruce said about Sheffield Wednesday

Steve Bruce was appointed Sheffield Wednesday manager in January 2019 after being sacked by Aston Villa in late 2018.

It then emerged in July 2019 that the coach had resigned from his position with the Owls and was joining Newcastle United.

Speaking about his brief stint with Wednesday, Bruce said in 2024, as per The Blackpool Gazette, “I know all about them. I had the privilege to manage them, but only for a short period of time. If it wasn’t for a call from Newcastle, then who knows what would’ve happened. I thoroughly enjoyed my time, they’ve got unbelievable support, which is the envy of most.

“They’re a big club with a huge tradition. It was a sliding doors moment having my hometown club calling me – it was difficult to turn down. There were a lot of disappointed people when I left, which I understand, but most would’ve understood I had to take the opportunity.

“I simply had to take it to manage them, I’m from there. Most people will say my time was this, that and the other, but I had to take it. It wasn’t easy, but I’m a Newcastle lad who has managed Newcastle – not many can say that. I had to make an awful decision, but I simply couldn’t refuse. You make decisions in your life, and you stay with them. Some of the ones you make are right, and some you might not make at all. I had to take that opportunity, and I’m pleased I did it.”
