The Met Office has told Brits to expect more “very hot” weather as temperatures begin to climb next week.

It comes after two weekends of heatwave conditions across much of the UK last month, which was the hottest June on record across England.

The hottest temperatures of the year so far were recorded in Faversham, Kent, last Tuesday (July 1), where it hit nearly 36C. Meanwhile, Greater Manchester saw much cooler temperatures and breezier conditions last week.

The Met Office has said a “third heatwave within four weeks” could hit the UK next week, with hot conditions not only affecting the southeast, but stretching up to the north of England and even Scotland.

The weather agency forecasts highs of 29C in Manchester next Friday (July 11) and Saturday, with London also seeing highs of 30C and 31C next week as “widespread heatwave conditions” hit the UK.

The Met Office definition of a heatwave is three consecutive days of temperatures exceeding the “heatwave threshold” for that part of the country. For most of the UK, this is 25C, with slightly higher numbers for the South and East, and rising to 28C in London.

With temperatures over 25C forecast from Thursday (July 10) and throughout the weekend, Greater Manchester could be in with a chance of experiencing an official heatwave next week.

Addressing the European weather model, Met Office meteorologist Honor Criswick said in a video on X: “It is suggesting that we could potentially see some heatwave conditions on its way.

“Not just across central areas and parts of the southeast, but this time actually a bit more widespread, so pushing up into the north and possibly even pushing up into Scotland.”

She added: “There’s still a little bit of uncertainty as to how hot things are going to get into next week.

“Nevertheless, there is a suggestion that temperatures will climb as we head further into next week.”

The Met Office explains that some weather models suggest the UK could see temperatures in the mid 30s, while others say temperatures could reach the mid to low 20s.

Stephen Keates, deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, agreed that there remains some uncertainty in the exact temperatures forecast next week, but said: “It looks like the second half of this coming week and into next weekend, temperatures are going to build once again, particularly across parts of the south and the east.

“Typically hot summer weather looks quite likely, but there is the potential for something very hot to develop.”
