Lewis Hamilton said he wants talks with Ferrari’s F1 car designers after his struggles in today’s rain-hit British Grand Prix.
He finished fourth in the race after being unable to catch Nico Hulkenberg’s Sauber, which took the final podium position. “That was the most difficult car I’ve driven here, in these conditions,” he told media including RaceFans afterwards.
Hamilton lost several positions due to the timing of his first pit stop but was able to regain many of them, passing the likes of Pierre Gasly and Lance Stroll. However he made his final pit stop to take slick tyres earlier than many other drivers and lost time sliding off the track at one point.
“I just struggled to keep up,” he said. “The tyres dropped off massively. The car was unbelievably tricky to drive.
“I think ultimately I learnt a lot today. There’s lots to take from the day, it’s only my second time driving in the wet in this car and I can’t even express to you how hard it is.
“It’s not a car that likes those conditions. But as I said, having lots of data to take from this, I might just sit down with the people that are designing the car for next year because there’s elements of this car that cannot go into the following year.”
Although the track conditions dried out towards the end of the race, Hamilton said his car’s handling did not get much more predictable. “Not particularly,” he said. “I mean, a little bit more – when it was fully dry at the end, that obviously means you’ve got lots of grip.
“But even then you saw I went wide, I nearly snapped and spun at turn 11 many times. So there was lots of mistakes today.”
Asked whether he thought he could have passed Hulkenberg to finish third Hamilton replied: “Obviously not.”
