A well-known restaurant in East Bristol has announced it is closing down after more than 20 years. Thali on St Marks’ Road, Easton, made the announcement on Instagram last night (Sunday, July 6).

The closure will only impact the Thali in Easton, with the one in Montpelier staying open.

The spot along the popular road in Easton will be taken over by Chai Guy, who currently run a coffee shop just a few doors’ down on the same road.

Writing on Instagram, Thali said: “After 20+ amazing years, Easton Thali is closing its doors.

“Huge love and thanks to all our brilliant staff and loyal customers – it’s been one hell of a ride! “The good news? Bahram from Chai Guy is taking over the space with a brand new concept and we can’t wait to see what he cooks up! “Need your Thali fix? Our friends Asha & Ramesh at Montpelier Thali have you covered and are keeping the Thali favourites going strong. “Much love, Team Thali.”

Several people reacted to the social media post, with one saying: “Oh, so sad to see you go.”

“So many great meals here,” wrote another.

Thali is a well-known restaurant in the city and, after building a solid reputation for itself in Bristol, the much-loved institution opened a restaurant further afield in Oxford back in the late 2010s, which was supposed to be a springboard for further UK openings.

However, this expansion proved to be its downfall. In May 2018 the parent company, Bristol Thali Company Ltd, entered administration following the closure of its Oxford site, which lasted just one year.

In a show of defiance, the group was then bought out of administration by a private company called Jugaard Ltd, founded by former Thali staff including kitchen manager Jose Blanco Rodriguez, operations manager Dominka Paulina Sawicka-Harris and Michael Dillon, an investor who owned 75 percent of the company.

But this attempt to steer the ship in the right direction proved to be ill-fated, as the Thali’s restaurants in Southville, Clifton and Totterdown all shut down.

After the announcement of the Easton closure, this means only one Thali now remains.

Chai Guy opened its doors on St Marks Road in 2023. The street vendor behind the coffee shop decided to open a business after going viral in Spain after serving his own blend of traditional chai during the lockdown.
