A man was fighting for his life in hospital tonight after he was brutally attacked during rush hour in a busy residential street.
The victim, in his 50s, was attacked on Springfield Road in Kings Heath at around 5pm today, Monday, July 7.
He was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.
A detective described the incident as “an appalling assault” during a “very busy time” of the day.

A police cordon was in place on Springfield Road for several hours this evening.
A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: “We’re investigating after a man was seriously assaulted on Springfield Road, Kings Heath, at around 5pm today.
“The man, in his 50s, was taken to hospital and remains in a critical condition this evening.
“A cordon remains in place and we’re carrying out CCTV, house to house and other enquiries.”

Det Sgt Shereen Ballentine said: “This was an appalling assault at what was a very busy time, with people walking and driving through the area.
“I’d appeal for anyone with CCTV, dashcam or mobile phone footage to get in touch with us as soon as possible.”
The force said ‘reassurance patrols’ will be carried out in the coming days.
