Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust have issued a statement following a positive update regarding a potential takeover of the club.

The 2025/26 Championship season is looking bleak from Sheffield Wednesday’s perspective, with the first-team squad’s plans being muddied by off-the-pitch issues at the club.

Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri continues to be in an unfit position to run the club, with a selection of players and staff still awaiting payment for June.

Chansiri’s handling of the situation has led to scrutiny, with the issues leading to concerns about the future of several key players at the club.

Amid the club being plagued with bad news, there was the positive update that Sheffield Wednesday’s potential sale was being handed to a private group with a history of handling successful sales of clubs. Since then, the news has been welcomed with open arms by the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust, but there are still plenty more things that need to be delivered at the club.

In a recent statement published by the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust, they have unsurprisingly shown their support to any potential successor to Dejphon Chansiri, as well as the fact that the Thai owner has passed control to an independent group to sell the club.

The statement started, saying that ‘the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust welcomes media reports over the weekend that Dejphon Chansiri has engaged professional advisors to handle a potential process to sell the club.’

Ian Bennett, Chair of the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust, said: “Whilst discussions with potential new owners will no doubt be at an early stage, Sheffield Wednesday fans will be looking forward to the potential of positive change in the leadership of the club. However, we will also want assurances from any potential new owners about their plans for the club, and their ability to deliver on those plans.”

The Trust has been clear in wishing that it can maintain a consistent dialogue with any future owners, suggesting that ‘interested parties are encouraged to contact the Supporters Trust for constructive dialogue about the challenges faced by the club and potential solutions.’

Given the issues that have been sourced from a significant lack of communication with Chansiri over issues in the previous couple of years, there is an understandable desire for transparency at the club, which the Trust suggests would be backed by the majority of supporters.

Sheffield Wednesday fans have understandably been left with trust issues amid the reign of Dejphon Chansiri, something that the new ownership will have to correct.

There are many concerns at the club, whether they be the uncertainty of the players’ and staff’s future, or the current state of Hillsborough Stadium and Middlewood training ground. All of that needs to be rectified, but in order to confirm the respect and support of the fans, there needs to be a consistent dialogue that trickles through the club.

It will take a long period of time for the club to recover from the issues they have been put through this season, but hopefully, a new group can get the supporters on side by rectifying everything.
