Trains were cancelled due to an obstruction on a busy commuter line in Birmingham this morning.

The Cross-City northbound line was closed in both directions due to an obstruction on the overhead wires between New Street and Aston.

No services were running between New Street and Lichfield.

Customers were being urged to use replacement buses.

West Midlands Railway wrote on social media platform X: “Cross-City North suspended due to an obstruction on the overhead wires.

“No services between Birmingham New Street, Lichfield and Perry Barr until further notice.

“Obstruction on the overhead wire between Birmingham New Street and Aston.

“Engineers are now on site addressing the necessary repairs.

“Rail replacement and ticket acceptance remains in place until further notice.

“We have road transport in place between Lichfield and Sutton Coldfield, and then ticket acceptance with National Express West Midlands buses.

“Disruption is expected until 10am but there may still be delays and cancellations.”

Transport for West Midlands added: “Disruption between Birmingham New Street and Lichfield Trent.

“Services are subject to delays and cancellations. Tickets accepted on National Express West Midlands between Birmingham and Lichfield/Walsall.

“Plan Ahead. Allow extra time for your journey.”
