An unexploded bomb was found inside a house this morning. At around 10.10am today (Tuesday 8 July), Merseyside Police received a report that the item had been found on Stubbs Lane in Noctorum, Birkenhead.

A bomb disposal team attended the house as a precaution. Pictures show multiple officers were on Hoylake beach afterwards.

Residents claimed roads leading up to the beach had been closed off to allow a controlled explosion to be carried out.

When contacted by the ECHO, a spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: “We can confirm that officers have been in Birkenhead following the discovery of a suspected unexploded ordnance.

“At around 10.10am today (Tuesday 8 July), it was reported that the object was inside a property on Stubbs Lane, in Noctorum, and as a precaution the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team were in attendance.

“There has now been a controlled explosion and the incident has been stood down.

“Thank you to residents for their patience.”

Del Willden, who spotted police in Hoylake, told the ECHO earlier today that the promenade was closed off from King’s Gap to Hoylake Lifeboat Station.

He said: “There’s a large police presence and an army bomb disposal squad here too.”

Another resident reported that “black sand” could be seen on the beach where the controlled explosion took place.
