Cost of living payments worth £200 can be claimed for families in need.

Birmingham City Council is issuing hardship grants as part of the Household Support Fund.

The government scheme sees cash allocated to councils, who then offer support to people on low incomes.

It is provided by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to help with essentials including food, energy and essential goods.

The next round of funding for Birmingham residents opened in June.

But it has since been confirmed that the scheme has been temporarily paused while staff sort through applications.

Birmingham City Council said: “The Hardship Grant Community Fund scheme is paused for new enquiries so the team can work through the waiting list.

“The fund will operate until March 31, 2026, allowing plenty of time for you to apply if you are eligible.

“If you have submitted a successful enquiry since the current scheme opened on June 23, 2025, you are on the waiting list and we will phone you in the next four weeks to complete your full application.

“We ask that you are patient while the team work through the waiting list.”

The council added: “Make sure that you turn your voicemail on – the team can leave you a message if you miss your call; your phone accepts calls from withheld or private numbers.

“Enquiries will reopen in late July 2025.

“If you are not currently on the waiting list, or it has been 12 months since your household last received a grant payment, you will be able to submit a new enquiry when enquiries resume in late July 2025.

“Completing the enquiry form does not mean that you are automatically entitled to receive a grant payment.

“We will check your eligibility during the application process. You may need to submit further documents.

“This is to verify the details you supply as part of your application, before any grant payment is made.
