Hollyoaks has revealed a mysterious new character in Tom Cunningham’s dramatic prison storyline.

It was confirmed in May that Ellis Hollins would be reprising his role as the iconic figure for the soap’s 30th anniversary. However, there was a shocking development as it was later revealed that Tom was now behind bars.

It turns out that he is in the same prison as Rex Gallagher, who was recently incarcerated after taking the blame for DI Alistair Banks’s death. Police officer Donny Clark has long suspected that Rex wasn’t responsible, and has sought to discover the truth.

Tuesday’s (8 July) episode began as Donny attempted to persuade Rex into telling the truth, promising him immunity if he would confess everything regarding the villainous Clare Devine. Rex, however, was thoroughly unmoved.

Donny played his trump card and enlisted the help of Ste Hay, Rex’s estranged boyfriend, in order to change the inmate’s mind. Rex still refused to budge, saying somebody else would have to take down Clare.

The mere mention of her name caught the attention of Tom, who was sitting nearby. He soon contacted Donny, saying he had plenty of information on his arch-enemy. Donny was ecstatic, though he was unaware that Clare had been listening to the entire conversation.

Tom soon returned to his cell, where he shared with an unseen individual that the wheels were in motion in regards to their plan of bringing Clare down. As his spirits were lifted, one wonders who he was speaking to.

Clare, meanwhile, had already orchestrated her plan for revenge, with the villain heading to the prison to arrange a deal with Rex. She ordered him to “swat” the “fly” that is Tom, threatening that Jacob Omari and Bobby Costello would be trafficked if he didn’t comply…

Tom departed Hollyoaks last September, following Hollins’ incredible 21-year run on the soap, ahead of his recent return.

Hollyoaks airs on Mondays-Wednesdays with its Channel 4 streaming premiere at 7am, then an E4 broadcast the same night at 7pm. Full episodes are also released on YouTube a week after their Channel 4 release.

Select omnibus episodes are available via Prime Video.
