Fire crews have battled a fire at a Lidl store in Bristol city centre this afternoon, Wednesday, July 9.

A fire is believed to have broken out on the first floor of the supermarket in the city.

As fire crews were at the scene on Union Street, the road was closed and fire fighters worked to extinguish the blaze.

Pictures taken at the scene show multiple fire crews outside the store, with a section of the street cordoned off.

Thick smoke plumed from the building, as fire fighters used fans to disperse the smoke.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage, the fire service has confirmed that no-one has suffered any injuries.

Avon and Somerset Police were also called to the scene.

A witness has said that Union Street has since reopened, but the road by Holland and Barrett remains closed.

A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue Service said: “Crews from Temple, Bedminster, Southmead, Hicks Gate and Kingswood were called at 12:04 to reports of a fire in a retail premises on Union Street in Bristol City Centre.

“On arrival, firefighters found a fire on the first floor of the building and used three high pressure hose reels, two 45mm safety jets and two 45mm covering jets to extinguish the blaze.

“Multiple fans were used to clear the smoke and thermal imaging cameras to check for any remaining hotspots. Six firefighters wore breathing apparatus for safety.

“There were fortunately no casualties.

“Avon & Somerset Police were also in attendance.

“Union Street and Nelson Street are due to reopen.”
