James Gunn’s Superman has soared high in its first reviews and achieved a satisfactory Rotten Tomatoes score, thus earning a reaction from the director himself. Known to be the official start of the rebooted DC Universe’s first chapter, Gods and Monsters, Superman is hitting theaters on July 11, 2025. With David Corenswet stepping into the shoes of the Man of Steel, the movie also features Nathan Fillion, Nicholas Hoult, Rachel Brosnahan, and many more.

James Gunn’s reaction to Superman’s certified fresh Rotten Tomatoes score

The 58-year-old filmmaker recently reacted to Superman becoming certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and getting one of the best scores for a Superman movie.

The early reviews of the upcoming DCU film came out recently, and it has managed to impress the critics. Moreover, the movie currently stands at an 85 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is more than Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), James Gunn shared the poster of Superman with a certified fresh mention on it. He further reacted by sharing a folded hands and heart emoji to express his gratitude for the love the movie is receiving. The movie is also the highest-rated Superman outing since 1980, when Christopher Reeve’s Superman II came out.

In the early reviews, critics have not shied away from complimenting the movie. They have also described it as one of the best comic book representations of Superman.

Odie Henderson of The Boston Globe wrote, “Superman hasn’t had this much charm and personality since Christopher Reeve made you believe a man could fly. And while David Corenswet won’t replace the memories of Reeve, he’s certainly the best Superman since the late actor hung up his cape and tights.”

Meanwhile, Hoai-Tran Bui of Inverse called the movie “visually bombastic” and wrote, “From the first frame of the wildly colorful and tooth-achingly earnest comic book epic, it’s clear Gunn’s love for Superman is so abundant that it threatens to overflow.”
