A Renfrewshire resident has told how his living room “lit up blue” after armed police stormed a Paisley flat amidst a ‘disturbance’.

Emergency services were called to a property in George Street around 7.45pm on Tuesday, July 8, after the alarm was raised.

Police say that due to the nature of the incident, armed officers were called in for support.

A George Street resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, told the Paisley Daily Express how he was first alerted to the “disturbance” when his living room “lit up blue” and he could hear shouting from outside.

He explained: “We were just sitting watching the tele when all we could see was the living room light up blue from the amount of police car lights outside.

“There was a hell of amount of cars rushing down here. I’ve never seen so many police cars, there must have been about 15 to 20.

“They blocked off the street and next thing we heard was all the shouting and commotion.

“The fire brigade arrived and the ambulance crew shortly after, that’s when we started to panic and realise something serious was happening.

“We could hear a screaming coming from upstairs and police shouting ‘police’ and then a short while later we heard them shout ‘armed police’, that was terrifying.

“It’s not everyday you see the armed police. The officers were dressed all in black with their guns, it really was something quite scary.”

Following the incident, a 23-year-old male was arrested shortly after 11pm, and taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital for treatment. His condition is unknown at this time.

Our source said emergency services worked together with the man.

The resident alleged: “The guy was shouting and screaming all sorts. There was a standoff and it looked like a case of who was going to blink first.

“The officers were great, so patient and professional, they walked him out the building and into a van.

“I’ve stayed here over twenty years and never quite seen anything like it. We’ve had our fair share of drama down here but that was something else.

“We were so relieved when it was all over, we couldn’t have gone to bed while it continued.”
