Manchester United have already made several squad number changes in pre-season, including giving a number to summer signing Matheus Cunha.

The Red Devils moved quickly this summer to secure a £62.5m deal for Matheus Cunha from Wolves, with Ineos agreeing to trigger his release clause.

This week marked the start of pre-season training and Cunha arrived at Carrington and was greeted with his new squad number as a United player.

Cunha has been given the iconic No.10 shirt in place of Marcus Rashford, who is expected to leave the club this summer after being told not to return to Carrington for training.

The No.10 shirt is an iconic number in football, but especially at Manchester United, where it has been worn by legends such as Sir Bobby Charlton and Wayne Rooney.

The history and prestige of the squad number has not been missed by Matheus Cunha, who spoke about the privilege in a new club interview.

“Wow,” Cunha said after being presented with a No.10 shirt. “It’s something that you always dream about. I can mention so many players who have worn this shirt.

“The one I always think about is Wayne Rooney. He was the one I grew up watching play. I have also swapped shirts with Marcus, so I have his shirt at my home.

“But of course, many players have worn this – Van Nistelrooy, Ibrahimovic. The dream is not only the shirt, but the history around the shirt is something that I have the privilege to do.

“With every single number, it would be a pleasure to wear this shirt, but with this one it is something different. Of course, the responsibility is coming, and I hope I can do everything like goals and assists to help the team.”

Matheus Cunha already impressing at Man United

Ruben Amorim is only a few days into pre-season training at Carrington, but he will already like what he is seeing from his big-money signing.

Reports suggest Cunha has already impressed staff and his teammates with his incredible finishing – something that was severely lacking in this United squad last season.

The latest training footage shows Cunha’s incredible ball-carrying skills, with the Brazilian wasting no time showing off his talents at Carrington.

United fans were stunned by Cunha after watching him in action, with fans confident that he can add something special to Amorim’s side next season.

Cunha appears to be a great tactical fit for Amorim, who wants a narrow No.10 to support a central striker in his 3-4-2-1 formation.

Fans can hopefully see Cunha make his United debut later this month when facing Leeds United on July 19.
