HOUSTON — As job growth in Houston appears to slow, immigration will play a key role in the ultimate employment numbers, one local economist says.
Houston’s May employment level was at its lowest mark since 2016, according to data from the Greater Houston Partnership. The metropolitan area added just 3,600 jobs between April and May and increased just 0.86% annually compared with May 2024. The historical average employment growth in Houston is 1.8%.
In fact, the Houston region has lost jobs through the first five months of the year, according to recent data analyzed by the GHP. As of May, employment stands at 3.471 million, down from a record high of 3.479 million at the end of December 2024. In total, Houston has lost 7,900 jobs so far this year.
