A busy road was closed this evening after an Arriva bus caught fire. Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service were called to Rake Lane in Wallasey shortly before 6pm on Thursday, July 10.

Dramatic pictures shared with the ECHO showed firefighters battling the flames before the fire was put out. Smoke can be seen billowing out from the rear end of the 410 New Brighton bus service.

An eyewitness described how the bus driver pulled over after smoke began emanating from the back of the bus. All passengers and the driver were out of the bus and uninjured, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service confirmed.

A fire service spokesperson said: “Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service attended an incident on Rake Lane, Liscard, earlier this evening.

“Crews were alerted at 17.58 and two fire engines were on scene at 18.02.

“Crews arrived to find a single decker bus with its engine well alight. All passengers and the driver were out of the bus and uninjured.

“Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire using a hose reel jet.

“Crews remained on scene to monitor temperature and assist with road closures before leaving at 19.34.”
