Rangers are eyeing up a move for Brighton keeper Carl Rushworth with Russell Martin keen on a reunion with the former Swansea shotstopper.
The Ibrox side on Wednesday landed Wolves defender Nasser Djiga and are pressing ahead with their rebuild with a move for Conor Coady close.
They’re also keen on a number of new wingers and are likely to move for a new striker once the futures of Hamza Igamane and Cyriel Dessers are resolved.
But one position that wasn’t really up in the air at Ibrox was between the sticks – until now.
It’s understood Rangers are considering a move to bring 24-year-old Rushworth, previously Martin’s No.1 at Swansea, north of the border to provide some serious competition for the gloves.
Rushworth, capped by England at U21 level, had a breakthrough year at Swansea under Martin in 2023/24, spent the first half of last season on loan at Hull but returned to Brighton in January and was second fiddle to Jason Steele.
The Seagulls have already knocked back a loan from one Championship club for the keeper who is reportedly keen to take control of his own destiny and decide his next club himself, rather than leave it to Brighton.
A reunion with Martin at Ibrox may then suit but whether or not Rangers are in a position to give him reassurances over first-team football is another matter.
Jack Butland seriously struggled for form last season and was replaced by Liam Kelly for a long spell and Martin may view his former keeper as an upgrade on both.
But if he does then it seems likely one of the remaining keepers will move on this summer as former England international Butland isn’t likely to be happy being second choice.
Despite not yet making a single appearance for Brighton, Rushworth has racked up almost 150 appearances in the English lower leagues during spells with Hull, Swansea, Walsall and Lincoln City.
