Manchester Airport has issued an update for passengers on hand luggage liquid rules this summer as airports across the country continue to roll out new security scanners.
The new technology provides a more detailed look into the contents of the luggage and means passengers no longer have to remove liquids and large electronic devices, such as laptops, from their bags.
Travellers can also carry liquid containers of up to two litres, instead of the 100ml limit. The strict 100ml liquid rules were imposed in 2006 following a foiled terror plot to blow up planes with homemade liquid bombs.
This week, Edinburgh and Birmingham Airports were the latest to introduce the new scanners and have scrapped the 100ml liquid limit.

But this has caused some confusion for passengers as the new rules are not universal – and they may find themselves caught out in their return journey.

Ms Alexander told Times Radio: “You should work on the basis that it is 100ml at the moment unless you have heard from your airport otherwise.
“And I always advise people to check in with their airlines and their airports before travelling.
“And I’m hopeful that we get to a point where all airports have this new technology in place soon so that everyone can have that extra added flexibility when they’re travelling.”
Manchester Airport has advised passengers to stick to this guidance. An airport spokesperson said: “New security technology is already in use across all three of Manchester Airport’s terminals, and the majority of passengers are screened with the new equipment.
“In accordance with Department for Transport guidance, passengers should continue to arrive at the airport prepared, and travel with liquids in containers no larger than 100ml in their hand baggage, unless advised otherwise.”
There are new scanners rolled out at Manchester Airport so some passengers may find they won’t need to remove their liquids or electronics from their bags.
But a number of old scanners are still in use – passengers won’t know which scanner they’ll pass through before they get there – so to avoid any delays and confusion, all passengers should follow the 100ml liquid rules.
