- Prince William is a towering 6’3’’—and apparently wants to make sure his father, King Charles, got his height right when speaking to France’s President Emmanuel Macron.
- Members of the royal family welcomed the Macrons with a lavish state banquet at Windsor Castle on July 8, where President Macron and the King chatted.
- Macron remarked about how tall William is—for context, Macron is 5’7’’—and, when Charles incorrectly said his eldest son’s height, the Prince of Wales made sure to correct him, according to a lip reader analyzing the scene.
When it comes to Prince William’s height—6’3’’, if you’re wondering—he’d apparently prefer you get it right.
During the much buzzed about French state visit that took place earlier this week, Kate Middleton wowed in red Sarah Burton for Givenchy on July 8 alongside her husband, who looked dapper himself. After wearing Dior for the first time earlier in the day on Tuesday, the Princess of Wales brought out her favorite tiara, the Queen Mary Lovers’ Knot, and a pair of earrings from Queen Elizabeth’s collection. The royal family was honoring France’s President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron at the state banquet at Windsor Castle—where President Macron commented on William’s height to his father, King Charles.

The Sun’s lip reader Nicola Hickling caught an exchange between Macron and the King, where the French president reportedly said of William, “He is incredibly tall.”
Charles, who himself is 5’10’’, seemed to reply of his eldest son, “He is very tall. He’s 6’1’’, he is, ever so.” William then gently corrected his father, adding to the conversation, “Actually, I’m 6’3’’.”
To this, Macron—who is 5’7’’—cheekily replied, “Unlike us, we’re short.”
William comes about his height honestly—his mother, Princess Diana, was 5’10’’; his brother, Prince Harry, is also tall, clocking in at 6’1’’.

At the state banquet, President Macron sat next to the Princess of Wales, clinking glasses with her and, before that, pulling out the future queen’s chair for her before taking his own seat next to her. Later, in one of the most viral moments from the state banquet, Macron winked at Kate in a playful gesture.
Earlier in the day, as William and Kate greeted the Macrons at RAF Northolt, the leader raised questions about royal protocol when he kissed her hand in a greeting. While this isn’t commonly done, it doesn’t break royal protocol—case in point, when greeting Mrs. Macron, the King himself said hello to her with a kiss on the hand.

According to the royal family’s official website, there are no strict ground rules for meeting royals: “There are no obligatory codes of behavior when meeting…a member of the royal family, but many people wish to observe the traditional forms,” the website read. “For men, this is a neck bow (from the head only) whilst women do a small curtsy. Other people prefer simply to shake hands in the usual way.”
At the state banquet, spouses—so the Macrons, the King and Queen Camilla, and the Prince and Princess of Wales—sat across from one another at the large table inside Windsor Castle. In addition to royalty, other celebrities at the dinner included Elton John and his husband David Furnish, Kristin Scott-Thomas, and Mick Jagger.
