A full list of Wetherspoons pubs at risk of closure has been revealed – as six boozers are put up for sale. The decision from Wetherspoons, which has pubs in Birmingham, has left punters angry as they fume it is the “end of an era”.

The much-loved pub chain is putting six of its boozers up for sale as part of what it called a “commercial decision”. The sites up for sale now are The Water Gate – Barnstaple, The Babington Arms – Derby and Baxter’s Court, Hackney as well as Kentish Drovers, Peckham.

The list is completed by The Grey Friar, Preston and The William Jameson, Sunderland. The chain told the Morning Advertiser the pubs are in “busy locations across the UK”.

One customer fimed on social media: “Another blow for the London boroughs sadly. Derby patrons will be devastated though its slightly off the beaten track very popular with real ale enthusiasts.”

Another said: “Baxter’s Court is a community asset in an area that’s rapidly gentrifying. Save Baxter’s Court!” A third wrote: “Shocking!! The watergate is a b***** good pub for the company!”

Wetherspoon spokesperson Eddie Gershon said: “Wetherspoon does, on occasion, put some of its pubs up for sale. This is a commercial decision by the company. The pubs will continue to operate as Wetherspoon outlets until they are sold.”

It comes after Wetherspoons closed one of its three Coventry pubs, the Spon Gate. The Spon Gate will call time after what was described as a ‘commercial decision’ by the pub company.

Named after one of the 12 gates in Coventry’s medieval wall, the venue on Croft Road is one of three pubs in the city centre owned by the company.

The Spon Gate forms part of the Skydome complex. The pub is decorated with photographs and drawings showing Coventry’s medieval history.
