Brendan Rodgers watched his Celtic side play their third pre-season friendly on Saturday.

The Hoops fielded two entirely different teams in each half as they lost 3-2 to Portuguese top-flight outfit Estrela da Amadora.

Rodgers blamed legginess on the defeat, but stressed he was really pleased with the exercise and the effort his squad put in at the Benfica Campus.

Celtic have signed six players so far this summer, and recently sold Nicolas Kuhn to Serie A side Como for a transfer fee of £16.5m plus add-ons.

So where exactly does Rodgers want to strengthen between now and the end of the window? He was asked in Lisbon after the Estrela match.

Rodgers told the Daily Record that plenty of work is going on back in Glasgow to find new players and improve the squad.

The Celtic manager made it clear that due to the sales of both Kyogo and Kuhn, he wants to bolster his winger and striker options.

He said: “I think there’s work going on behind the scenes. It’s clear we need to improve the squad. A lot of work is going on behind the scenes, there are loads of names floating about.

“I think the positions you’ve mentioned, we’re clear that we need to improve our frontline. We lost Kyogo in January and another player with Nicolas gone.

“That’s a lot of goals that’s gone out of the team. So for us, we need to strengthen that area of the field. But the guys back home are working hard on that.”

Rodgers on left-back position and Hayato Inamura

Celtic re-signed Kieran Tierney on a free transfer, but Greg Taylor decided not to sign a new contract and is now representing PAOK in Greece.

Hayato Inamura appeared to be signed as a centre-back, but pleasantly surprised Rodgers at left-back against Cork City on Tuesday.

Inamura played the position again versus Estrela, but Rodgers is not ruling out the possibility of signing a new left-back amid speculation surrounding Flavio Nazinho.

He continued: “The pre-season is always to assess. We know the model here at the club is always to improve them.

“Sometimes that means they come in and you assess and look, and look to see what’s right for the development of them and the team.

“That’s what I’m about, getting a collection of individual players that I can see development and improvement in.

“If they are going to be close to the first-team, they’ll stay and do that. If not, we may feel they need to go out. Ina’s that example. I just wanted to get the chance to see him and we’ll continue to do that.

“But we know in the background that if we need to move on that position, that’s something that we will be ready to do.”
